The Process of Freezing Eggs
Perhaps one of the biggest concerns that you may have surrounds the process itself. Will it hurt, will it keep you from living a normal life, how long will it take, how much will it cost?
The egg retrieval process require a patient to go through the same treatment as those who are pursuing in-vitro fertilization with fresh eggs. Hormone injections and birth control pills are used in order to mature the eggs.
It can take up to 6 full weeks to complete the cycle of freezing your eggs. Starting with a few weeks of birth control and hormone injections self-administered at home to temporarily halt your body’s natural hormones. After that there are hormone injections that will stimulate your ovaries and cause multiple eggs to mature at one time.
Once your eggs have been determined via ultrasound to be mature enough for extraction, your doctor will remove them at an in-office appointment. The procedure may be delicate in nature, but you will feel little to no discomfort during the process. Your eggs will be frozen immediately.
It is generally recommended that 10-20 eggs are frozen, in order to boost your fertility chances when you are ready to pursue pregnancy.
